8VC, the venture firm led by Palantir founder Joe Lonsdale, is raising $1 billion for its sixth fund—14% more than its previous $880 million fund closed in 2023. Known for its investments in defense tech, 8VC has backed companies like Saronic, which builds robotic boat drones, and Overland AI, which develops autonomous defense vehicles. The firm also focuses on health tech and life sciences, with deals including Senti Bio and Vir. Lonsdale, a former PayPal intern and Thiel associate, moved 8VC to Austin in 2020, citing a preference for the city's "ideological diversity."
