Calmara's proposal of using AI to visually detect STIs by analyzing a photo of a partner's genitals is fraught with practical and ethical issues, particularly since most STIs are asymptomatic and cannot be diagnosed through visual inspection. This approach is misleading and could falsely reassure users about their sexual health. Other startups are working on accessible STI testing with a more scientific and responsible approach, emphasizing the importance of lab-based diagnostics. Calmara's marketing and communications have been criticized for suggesting it could replace medical advice, despite its own disclaimer advising against such use. Concerns also extend to data privacy and the legal implications of inadvertently handling explicit images of minors. This initiative by Calmara, associated with HeHealth, appears to be an attempt to generate buzz around AI without providing a genuinely safe or reliable health solution.
