WhatsApp is now rolling out passkey verification for iOS, enhancing security by eliminating the need for SMS one-time passcodes. This feature, which arrived on Android six months ago, enables iOS users to log into WhatsApp using facial recognition, biometrics, or a PIN via Apple’s passkey manager. Passkeys not only make it more challenging for unauthorized access—requiring physical access to the device—but also sidestep the vulnerabilities associated with traditional username and password combinations. Users can activate this feature by going to the app's settings under “Account” and selecting the “Passkeys” option. Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp's head of product, emphasized the ease and enhanced security this feature brings to logging back into the app. Other companies like X, Google, PayPal, and TikTok have also recently adopted passkey support.
