Apple has revised its App Store guidelines, now permitting globally the use of emulators for classic console games, a move that brings the possibility of downloading such games directly within the apps while highlighting the developers' responsibility to adhere to copyright laws. This adjustment opens up new revenue avenues for Apple, as emulators, previously prevalent on Android, may now make their way to the iOS platform, with the stipulation that digital items must be sold via in-app purchases. This update follows Apple's compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which also saw the tech giant enabling game streaming services and modifying rules for mini-games and AI chatbots. Furthermore, the update encompasses provisions for HTML5-based mini-apps, potentially accommodating services provided by super apps like WeChat, and significantly, it allows music streaming services such as Spotify to present subscription information and external purchase links, though Spotify has reported that Apple has yet to approve its latest update submission. This development arrives amid ongoing legal scrutiny over Apple's App Store practices, including a lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice.
