Apple recently revealed plans to broaden the iPhone repair process by permitting the use of components from used devices, starting this fall, specifically for the iPhone 15 series. This update, which encompasses all components including batteries, displays, and cameras, marks a departure from previous restrictions that limited component reuse to parts not requiring configuration. However, Face ID components will not be initially included. This move, partly in response to criticisms around "parts pairing," seeks to balance user security and privacy with increased repairability. Apple has faced backlash for this practice, which critics argue hampers user repair efforts. The change follows closely on the heels of Oregon's right-to-repair legislation and is part of a broader effort by Apple to enhance device longevity and repairability, amid growing international support for right-to-repair initiatives. Additionally, Apple is enhancing Activation Lock to prevent part harvesting from stolen devices and promoting transparency about device repairs and component authenticity, despite not planning to sell refurbished parts directly.
