News of the Day
Bench, a Canada-based accounting platform serving over 35,000 U.S. businesses, has abruptly shut down, leaving its customers scrambling to secure financial records. Backed by investors like Shopify and Bain Capital Ventures, Bench announced it will cease operations on December 27, 2024, and users have until March 2025 to download their data. This sudden closure has sparked outrage from users, many of whom were unaware until the notice appeared online. The platform's shutdown coincides with a recommendation for customers to migrate to Kick, a new accounting startup led by Conrad Wadowski, raising questions about potential pre-existing ties between the two firms. Bench’s co-founder, Ian Crosby, criticized VCs for ousting him in 2021, suggesting the leadership change led to the startup's downfall.
