China's vocational education push successfully generates a workforce tailored for its burgeoning electric car and semiconductor industries. Despite tech layoffs and high youth unemployment, companies like electric battery giant CATL and semiconductor firm SMIC are seeing significant employee growth, per CNBC's public filings analysis. CATL's workforce has more than tripled to 118,914 in 2022, with most employees holding less than a bachelor's degree. Similarly, SMIC's R&D team expanded by nearly 30% since 2021, with a notable increase in staff with junior college or lower education, contrasting a decrease in bachelor’s degree holders. This trend aligns with China's intensified efforts to enhance technological self-sufficiency amidst U.S. restrictions on access to critical tech. The Chinese government's focus on vocational education, drawing inspiration from countries like Germany, supports this strategic workforce development.
