Despite early missteps, such as building an unneeded robot prototype, Fermata has deployed over 100 cameras and raised $10 million in Series A funding from Raw Ventures. The company will use the funds to scale operations, targeting profitability by 2026, and expand beyond greenhouse tomatoes into new crops. Valeria Kogan, a bioinformatics Ph.D. student turned agri-tech entrepreneur, founded Tel Aviv-based Fermata in 2020 to use AI and computer vision to monitor plant health in greenhouses. The startup's software analyzes crop images captured twice daily, diagnosing diseases or pests and notifying farmers via an app. Fermata’s approach—focusing on farmers' needs, maintaining an in-house data labeling team, and training AI on real-world customer data—has set it apart, earning partnerships with major firms like Bayer and Syngenta.
