News of the Day

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has made a significant impact on local economies across the U.S. and globally, though its effect on national economic data may be overstated. A report by Nomura indicates that Swift's tour contributed to a 0.03% increase in U.S. retail sales and a 0.02% rise in real GDP between Q1 and Q3 2023. Over the entire year, the tour accounted for 0.5% of nominal consumption growth. Cities visited by Swift experienced notable economic benefits, with lodging inflation rising by an average of 2.1 percentage points during the month of her shows. For instance, Chicago saw lodging prices increase by 3.1 percentage points, occupancy rise by 8.1 percentage points, and hotel revenue per available room jump by 59% due to Swift's performances. These local enhancements, however, are less likely to be reflected in national-level statistics in larger economies. Nonetheless, the tour could serve as a significant economic catalyst, especially in smaller economies like Singapore and Sweden. The Eras Tour, which concludes in late 2024, has already generated over $200 million globally from its film version, set to stream on Disney+ starting March 15.
