In a recent podcast, Twitter's former product manager Sara Beykpour revealed Google built the first Twitter app for Android. Back then, Google created demo apps for popular social platforms like Foursquare and Twitter to jumpstart Android adoption. These apps shared a similar look as Google wrote them all. Twitter then took Google's Android app and further developed it.
