News of the Day

In response to the growing threat of smartphone theft, Google announced new security features at its Google I/O 2024 developer conference. One of these features, called Theft Detection Lock, will automatically lock the device if it detects a common motion associated with theft, such as sudden rapid movement in the opposite direction. Another feature, Offline Device Lock, will protect the device if it's intentionally disconnected from the network, triggering protection measures if authentication fails repeatedly. Additionally, a new security upgrade will make it harder for thieves to factory reset stolen devices, requiring the thief to know the device or Google account credentials to set it up again. These measures aim to make stolen devices unsellable and reduce incentives for phone theft. Finally, biometric authentication will be required to change sensitive information when the device is logged in from an insecure location.
