Alex Fox's new iPhone app, Mood.camera, harks back to the charm of old-school photography by incorporating retro filters without the immediate gratification of a live preview. Users can adjust settings such as quality, tone, lenses, and exposure directly from the main screen, but the outcome of their adjustments remains a surprise until the photo develops, mirroring the anticipation once typical of film photography. This approach encourages photographers to engage more fully with their surroundings rather than the app's effects. Launched with a prototype in October 2023 and beta-tested on Reddit, the app has been refined with the help of photographers who took over 100,000 photos. Mood.camera offers a 7-day free trial, after which users can choose a monthly subscription for $1.99 or a one-time purchase of $14.99. This app joins others like Lapse and Dispo in trying to recapture the essence of film photography but stands out by forgoing modern conveniences to enhance the user's moment-to-moment experience.
