Apple and Microsoft have been spared from additional regulatory requirements under the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), as the bloc's lawmakers have determined that Apple's iMessage and Microsoft's search engine Bing do not meet the criteria for designation under the DMA. This decision also extends to Microsoft's web browser Edge and its online advertising service, Microsoft Advertising, which were not classified as "core platform services" needing tighter controls. Both tech giants were previously identified as DMA "gatekeepers" for five other services, including Apple's iOS, App Store, Safari, and Microsoft's Windows OS and LinkedIn, which are subject to the DMA's interoperability requirements and other regulatory obligations aimed at fostering competition.
