Apple's first venture into "spatial computing" with the Vision Pro headset is one of the most anticipated developments in consumer electronics. Announced at WWDC in June for an early 2024 release with a price tag of $3,499, its exact launch date remains unclear. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts a release in late January or early February, with initial shipments to Apple estimated at 500,000 units for the year. This projection, however, indicates a scaling back from earlier expectations of around one million units to less than 400,000. Despite Apple's vast market influence and the company's expectation to ship over 200 million iPhones this year, the 500,000 Vision Pro units represent a relatively modest figure for Apple. The Vision Pro is seen as a significant gamble for CEO Tim Cook, marking a new product category and form factor for Apple, with a price point that may be prohibitive even for Apple's standard customer base. Considering the long history of VR not meeting market expectations, the Vision Pro faces a challenging journey ahead. Kuo describes the Vision Pro as "Apple’s most important product of 2024," underscoring the significant investment and years of speculation surrounding its development.
