Photonic computing startup Lightmatter has raised $400 million to advance its optical interconnect technology, which enables hundreds of GPUs to work synchronously. This breakthrough improves the performance of AI models by significantly enhancing the communication between GPUs in datacenters, a current bottleneck in high-performance computing. Using photonics, Lightmatter’s interconnect layer offers faster and more energy-efficient data transfer, providing an alternative to traditional electrical systems. This round, led by T. Rowe Price Associates, values the company at $4.4 billion.
