Mesh Optical Technologies is positioning itself as the "Made in America" answer to a critical AI infrastructure chokepoint, announcing a $50 million Series A to scale domestic manufacturing of optical transceivers. Founded by a trio of former SpaceX engineers, Travis Brashears, Cameron Ramos, and Serena Grown-Haeberli, who previously designed the laser links for Starlink satellites, the startup is tackling a market currently 60% dominated by Chinese suppliers. While the tech world obsesses over the scarcity of GPUs, Mesh is sounding the alarm on the interconnects that stitch them together; as CEO Brashears notes, a million-GPU cluster requires nearly five million transceivers to function. By redesigning these modules to eliminate a power-hungry legacy component, Mesh claims it can slash total GPU cluster energy consumption by 3% to 5%, a massive efficiency gain for hyperscalers like Amazon and Google who are already redlining global power grids. Backed by Thrive Capital, the Los Angeles-based firm is betting that its "lights-out" automated factory will allow it to produce 1,000 units per day by the end of 2026, creating a secure, high-speed supply chain that isn't just a commercial advantage, but a national security necessity in the race for AI supremacy.
