📝 Meta acquires WaveForms

Meta has acquired WaveForms, a promising AI voice startup founded just eight months ago, for an undisclosed amount, bolstering its AI division, Superintelligence Labs. WaveForms previously raised $40 million at a $160 million valuation from Andreessen Horowitz. Co-founders Alexis Conneau (ex-Meta/OpenAI, co-creator of GPT-4o Advanced Voice Mode) and Coralie Lemaitre (ex-Google) have joined Meta. WaveForms focused on solving the “Speech Turing Test” — creating AI voices indistinguishable from humans — and developing “Emotional General Intelligence” to enhance AI understanding of human self-awareness. The startup’s website has been taken down post-acquisition, and the fate of its remaining team is currently unclear.
Marc Andreessen (@pmarca) on why internet ads aren’t going anywhere:
“If you really want to get to a billion and then five billion people, you can’t do that with a paid offering… you need an indirect business model. Ads are the obvious one.”
