📝 Microsoft ban police facial recognition

News of the Day

Microsoft has updated its policy for the Azure OpenAI Service, explicitly prohibiting U.S. police departments from using generative AI for facial recognition. This new rule is part of broader changes that also restrict any law enforcement worldwide from using real-time facial recognition technology in "uncontrolled" environments, such as with body cameras and dashcams. The policy change follows controversy surrounding Axon's use of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model to summarize body camera audio, which raised concerns about potential biases and inaccuracies. Although it’s unclear if Axon's application specifically prompted these updates, Microsoft’s revised terms now explicitly prevent such uses within the U.S., while still allowing some applications outside the U.S. and in controlled environments like stationary cameras in back offices.
