University of Waterloo spinout Nfinite has secured a $4.6-million CAD NRC IRAP grant to scale its nanotechnology that makes “paper perform like plastic,” enabling flexible paper packaging to be sealed and protected from water and oxygen without losing recyclability or compostability. The Kitchener-Waterloo startup, which deposits ultra-thin protective films onto rolls of paper using a semiconductor-like process, says the funding arrives at the “valley of death” for deep-tech manufacturers and will finance a pilot plant capable of producing 200,000 square metres annually, as well as collaborations with partners like Amcor, PepsiCo and Unilever. Since raising an $8.9-million seed round in 2024, Nfinite—now led by CEO Miguel Galvez, who previously built and sold thin-film company NBD Nano—has refined its model to sell coated paper directly to consumer-packaged goods companies, targeting products that require longer shelf life than current paper options can provide. The grant gives the 18-person team up to four years of runway to prove its pilot manufacturing and prepare for a Series A, with Galvez stressing that Nfinite intends to scale only once the technology is fully validated.
