News of the Day

Obvio, a San Carlos startup on a mission to make American streets safer without turning cities into surveillance states, has raised a $22 million Series A round led by Bain Capital Ventures. Founded by former Motive colleagues Ali Rehan and Dhruv Maheshwari, the company installs solar-powered AI cameras at stop signs to detect and deter dangerous driving behaviors — from rolling stops to illegal turns — while promising strict limits on data retention and sharing. Unlike controversial players like Flock, Obvio processes footage locally and deletes non-violation data within 12 hours, aiming to strike a balance between enforcement and civil liberty. Operating in five Maryland cities and expanding soon, Obvio offers its tech to municipalities for free and earns revenue from citations, with a business model rooted in trust, transparency, and targeted deterrence — not blanket surveillance.
