David Millette, a YouTube creator, has filed a class action lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of using transcripts from YouTube videos to train its AI models without consent or compensation, violating copyright laws and YouTube’s terms of service. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, seeks over $5 million in damages. The complaint highlights that OpenAI’s models, including ChatGPT, were trained on data from various sources, including transcribed YouTube videos, without notifying or compensating content creators. This lawsuit is part of a broader trend of copyright holders challenging AI companies over data usage, especially as access to high-quality training data becomes more restricted.
