📝 Pixel-Flo raises $6M

News of the Day

Pixel-Flo, a deep-tech semiconductor photonics spin-out from the University of Sheffield’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, secured $6.6 million in an oversubscribed Seed funding round to transition its novel microLED manufacturing process from laboratory development to industrial scale-up. Northern Gritstone led the investment, with backing from SCVC, the Parkwalk Northern Universities Venture Fund, and Germany’s High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF). Founded in 2025 by Dr. Rick Smith, Dr. Suneal Ghataora, and Simon Jones, the startup addresses the commercialization bottleneck of conventional mechanical mass-transfer methods—where assembly yields for features under ten microns remain below 60%—by introducing a proprietary fluidic self-assembly mechanism called Continuous-Flo Mass Transfer. This high-throughput platform combines specialized microLED ink with equipment extensions that seamlessly integrate with industry-standard slot-die coating machinery, allowing manufacturers to drastically improve wafer utilization and scale across variable panel sizes without retooling lines. To capitalize on the massive performance advantages of microLEDs, which offer up to five times the brightness and four times the energy efficiency of traditional displays, Pixel-Flo will use the capital to expand its technical engineering teams, relocate to expanded laboratory and office facilities in Sheffield, and advance commercial evaluation on commercial-grade coating lines. Furthermore, the company is driving international expansion into critical hardware supply chains, underscored by its recent hiring of Taiwan-based Business Development VP Sanger Hsu to manage early-stage customer engagement across the broader Asian display ecosystem.
