Malmö-based ClimateTech startup Salt & Fiber has secured $325k in a pre-seed investment round alongside the launch of a $50k crowdfunding campaign to accelerate the development of its sustainable textile yarns derived from beach-cast seagrass. Founded in 2025 by Annika John, the company addresses the dual challenges of costly municipal coastal waste management and the high environmental toll of conventional textile manufacturing by repurposing raw seagrass into an entirely plant-based, biodegradable alternative. The resulting material requires no fresh water, arable land, or synthetic polymers, eliminating microplastic shedding while leveraging the plant's inherent fire-resistant properties without the use of toxic chemical treatments. Currently operating within the Älmhult x IKEA incubator, the startup has already established a critical raw material supply agreement with a municipality on Sweden's southern coast, positioning itself to help European fashion brands meet tightening corporate sustainability reporting and extended producer responsibility regulations as it targets full commercialization between 2027 and 2028.
