The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) confirmed that its X Twitter account was hacked, as stated by a spokesperson to TechCrunch. An unauthorized tweet falsely claiming the SEC's approval of spot bitcoin ETFs was posted on the account, leading to misinformation being circulated among news outlets and online figures. The misleading tweet, which stood for about 30 minutes, was subsequently deleted. SEC Chair Gary Gensler clarified the situation with a tweet confirming the account compromise and stating that the SEC had not approved any spot bitcoin exchange-traded products. Following the unauthorized tweet, Bitcoin's price briefly surged near $48,000 but later settled around $45,700, as per CoinMarketCap data.
