📝 Silicon Microgravity raises $8.1M
News of the Day
Cambridge-based tech startup Silicon Microgravity (SMG) has raised $8.1 million in a funding round led by West Hill Capital with participation from the UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund (UKI2S), aiming to scale its GPS-free inertial navigation and gravity sensing technologies. Originally a spin-out from Cambridge University backed by BP, the company utilizes advanced microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) developed by Professor Ashwin Seshia to provide highly accurate, compact, and low-cost navigation alternatives in extreme environments where GPS signals are unavailable or denied. Operating across dual-use commercial, space, and defense sectors, SMG’s high-performance accelerometers, gyroscopes, and gravimeters are currently supporting advanced space programs—ranging from lunar exploration to satellite-enabled mineral surveying—and the startup plans to use the capital to scale its UK manufacturing, expand semiconductor production capacity, and accelerate commercial partnerships across Europe and the United States.
