The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has concluded its extensive investigation into Tesla's Autopilot system, which scrutinized its role in numerous crashes, including 13 fatalities. The investigation identified that Tesla's inadequate driver engagement system failed to match the operating capabilities of Autopilot, leading to a dangerous gap in safety expectations and actual system performance. This has led to predictable misuse and serious accidents. Despite ending this initial probe, NHTSA has initiated a new investigation to assess the effectiveness of the recall fix Tesla implemented in December, which was intended to enhance driver monitoring. This ongoing scrutiny includes other investigations by the Department of Justice and challenges from the California DMV over Tesla’s promotional claims about Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capabilities.
