X backing free speech lawsuits

News of the Day

X (formerly known as Twitter), is financially backing a lawsuit by actress Gina Carano against Disney and Lucasfilm. Carano, known for her role in the Disney+ series "The Mandalorian," was fired in February 2021 after sharing a controversial social media post comparing the treatment of conservatives in the U.S. to Jewish people in Nazi Germany. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles federal court, alleges wrongful discharge and sex discrimination, seeking Carano's reinstatement on the show and compensation for lost earnings and future employment opportunities. Carano's dismissal followed her previous online controversies over COVID-19, Black Lives Matter criticisms, and social media conduct. Musk, advocating for free speech, had previously announced X would cover legal expenses for users facing unfair treatment by employers over platform activities. Carano expressed gratitude to Musk and X for supporting her case, emphasizing her fight against enforced compliance with extreme ideologies. X Corp publicly endorsed Carano's legal battle, framing it as a stand for free speech rights and against workplace bullying and discrimination. Disney has yet to comment on the lawsuit, which reflects ongoing debates around free speech, social media, and employment practices.
